Mach-E vs. Y

Introduction

The Mustang Mach-E's biggest competitor is considered to be the Tesla Model Y. With its standard all-wheel drive and one battery size that delivers ranges from 303 to 330 miles, depending on tire size and trim, it is understandable why Ford continues to consider them as their rival. However, there are many other things the Mach-E has going for it that the Tesla Model Y does not.

Charging Times and Networks

The Tesla Model Y and the Ford Mach-E both post some impressive numbers on the ranges of their batteries. The Model Y is capable of driving 330 miles before needing a charge, beating the extended battery of the Mach E, which can drive for 312 miles, by 18 miles.

The estimated charge time for the Tesla Model Y is also impressive. On their DC fast charging stations with a maximum power of 250 kW, the Tesla Model Y can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 27 minutes. The Mach E comes under this time when using the DC fast charging stations, taking between 34 to 41 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent.

Where the Mach E comes on top of the Model Y is in the number of charging stations with available plugs. Tesla has close to 5,000 public charging stations with 45,000+ Tesla Supercharges, but this is half of what Ford's BlueOval Charge Network provides. This network has over 29,000 public charging stations with over 84,000 plugs available, close to double the number of Tesla stations and charges. Of note, as well, is the news of Ford making a deal with Tesla that will let EV owners use Tesla's high-speed Superchargers in early 2024.

Another item of note is that there are over 1,900 Ford certified dealerships across the country that support their owners. Tesla lists 177 service centers, with 46 in California.

Cargo Space

The Tesla Model Y has about the same amount of cargo space when compared to the Ford Mach-E. The Mach-E has up to 29.7 cu. ft. behind the second row, which expands to 59.7 cu. ft. when the second row seats are folded. The Tesla Model Y boasts 30.2 cu. ft. of space behind the second row and expands to a maximum of 59.7 cu. ft. when the second row seats are folded.

On the other hand, the Ford Mach-E has a larger frunk than the Tesla Model Y. When comparing the two, the Mach-E's frunk allows for 4.7 cu. ft. of storage in the front, and includes a handy drain plug in case you wanted to fill it with ice and beverages. The Tesla Model Y is a bit smaller, showing only 4.1 cu. ft. in its front end storage.

Interior and Acceleration

Today's drivers have a lot on their minds, including the comfort and safety of their passengers. Having the ability to make adjustments on the fly, attending your passengers' needs, and responding to the ever changing chaos of today's roads are the responsibility of the driver. The new electric vehicles have taken great strides to make this as simple as possible in an effort to ease the mind of the owners.

The Model Y comes with a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes wireless device charging, USB ports, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot and automatic climate control. While this sounds impressive, there are some key things that drivers are used to in their modern vehicles. All of the driving information is displayed on the center screen, which means the driver will have to take their eyes off the road. Another thing to consider is that there is no Apple Carplay nor Android Auto compatibility on its touchscreen. The Mach-E does provide a 10.2-inch instrument cluster in front of the driver as well as a 15.5-inch portrait-style center-stack LCD touchscreen that contains climate and radio controls.

Electric vehicles are some of the quickest on the market, achieving a speed from zero to sixty in very little time. The Tesla Model Y is one of the quickest vehicles with a time of 4.8 seconds, and with the Acceleration Boost (Long Range firmware upgrade is required for this) can lower this down to 4.3 seconds. The Mach-E outperforms the Model Y in the acceleration department with its GT model clocking in at 3.8 seconds and the GT Performance Edition at 3.5 seconds.

Conclusion

The Tesla Model Y has been out for a couple of years and, though it was extremely innovative at the time and caused the car industry to make many changes to keep up, is starting to look outdated with both its offerings and revenue models. As more electric vehicles are coming on to the market, consumers are looking at purchasing vehicles that have more bells and whistles included in the options rather than using a piecemeal system of add-ons to get the vehicle they want. The Mach-E provides a lot of these things standard with their base models, giving the consumer a wonderful experience with greater satisfaction. Come to Johnson Sewell Ford Lincoln in Marble Falls, TX and give the Ford Mach-E a test drive, and surprise yourself with the experience of owning a Mach-E.
