Mach-E vs. ID.4

Introduction

The Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Volkswagen ID.4 are mid-size electric vehicle entries that have gained their fair share of the market. They both have many good qualities that attract today’s buyers and are often compared by consumers looking to purchase new electric vehicles, but one does come out on top after all the comparing is done.

Charging Times and Networks

Both the ID.4 and Mach-E post some impressive statistics for the ranges of their batteries. The ID.4’s 209 miles for their standard battery option, though, comes under the 247 miles for the Mach-E. The ID.4’s extended battery doesn’t fair much better, with a posted 275 miles when compared with the Mach-E’s 312 miles.

The estimated charging times on a public fast charger from 10 to 80% show both the ID.4 and the Mach-E very close. While the numbers for charging aren’t too clear for Volkswagen, their site states that it takes 30 to 36 minutes for their battery to charge, while the Mach-E’s battery takes a little longer, clocking in at 34 to 41 minutes.

Another concern amongst EV buyers is the availability of charging stations. Volkswagen offers unlimited 30-minute charging at Electrify America’s charging stations for the first 3 years after purchasing the ID.4. Ford also offers a nice incentive, with 250 kWh complimentary charging with Electrify America, with lifetime access to Blue Oval Charge Networks, and with Tesla’s networks becoming available in 2024, greatly expanding the number of stations.

At-home charging continues to entice consumers, as well, with both Level 1 and Level 2 chargers becoming more affordable. Volkswagen reports that using a Level 2 charger is 6.8 times faster than a Level 1, while Mach-E states that using a Level 2 charger is 9 times faster than a Level 1 charger.

Cargo Space

Space in vehicles for groceries, baggage, and athletic wear continues to be a high demand amongst consumers. Both the ID.4 and Mach-E provide plenty of space that people can really use to their benefit.

The ID.4 boasts a large 30.4 cu. ft. behind the rear seats, with the Mach-E providing a close 29.7 cu. ft. of storage space. When the rear seats are folded down, the ID.4 expands to 64.2 cu. ft behind the first row while the Mach-E gives a slightly less 59.7 cu. ft.

Though the ID.4 has more storage within the cabin, the one thing it doesn’t include is storage capacity in the front, or the “frunk.” The frunk of the Mach-E gives the vehicle an extra 4.7 cu. ft. of storage, and comes with a drain plug, allowing for the iced beverages to be stored while the water is safely removed via the plug. There is no need to open the entire vehicle up to the elements, only the front end.

Interior and Acceleration

Some of the other things that consumers really pay attention to are both the access of functionality and the acceleration of their vehicles. The driver should be able to make changes easily and comfortably while being able to safely get up to speed to merge with other traffic.

The ID.4 comes with a 12-inch touchscreen, along with capacitive buttons for controlling the climate within the vehicle. The Mach-E has a massive 15.5-inch touchscreen that gives the occupants access to every aspect of the vehicle, including navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless device charging station and a WiFi-hotspot.

The acceleration of the new electric vehicles are only surpassed by supped up muscle cars, and even then only rarely. With its non-shifting motor drive, the electric vehicles rely on the amount of pressure depressed on the accelerator to get to the correct speed, and every amount of horsepower counts. The ID.4 boasts 201 hp on its standard drive and 295 hp on its all-wheel drive models. The Mach-E has a 266 hp drive on its base model and extends this to an impressive 480 hp on its GT eAWD models, allowing for lightning quick bursts of speed when you need it.

Conclusion

Ultimately, both of these vehicles would be beneficial to both your wallet and your environment, and it is up to you, as the consumer, to make the decision as to what you need for your lifestyle. However, it is up to the dealerships to make sure you are armed with the most information you can have so that your decision is based on facts rather than conjecture.

Based on the information presented, it is obvious that one of these vehicles could be a better match than the other. The Mach-E, with its larger batteries, larger charging networks, faster Level 2 charging, 4.7 cu. ft. frunk, larger 15.5-inch touchscreen, and higher horsepower engines will get you to where you need to go faster, safer, and in more comfort than the ID.4.
